This picturesque township is named in honour of
Michael Samson, who accompanied the District’s
first settler Mr Walter Padbury, on his journey
in 1863. In 1910 Point Samson was established as
the major port for the Roebourne District. The
initial development of Point Samson was largely
due to the decline of Cossack as a shipping
port, as a result of silting problems in the
Tien Tsin Harbour, and the subsequent inability
of Cossack to service larger vessels that were
then beginning to service the growing population
of the Shire. A large commercial fishing fleet
still operates out of the town and can be seen
at the wharf facilities at Johns Creek.
Today Point Samson’s attractive setting has
become a popular beach retreat for locals and
visitors alike. Samson now offers a growing
amount of accommodation and attractions, with
the most famous of these being TaTa's Restaurant
Cafe, renowned for selling the best speciality
meat and fish dishes in the North West. Point
Samson is also a popular destination as a day
trip from Karratha and Dampier.
